The Favourite, Roma and Vice Lead The 2019 Oscar Nominations

2019’s Oscar nominations are in, and it’s going to be a battle. Several movies are up for multiple awards, and between now and February 24th when the show airs there will be plenty of speculation as to who will take home the most statues. Here are the nominees.

While the Academy has the ability to nominate 10 films each year, they have yet to do so, and this year they’ve chosen 8 to receive nominations. The films up for the big award this year are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born and Vice. None of these are a huge surprise, but it’s going to be a fight to the finish. Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book and Roma all took home Golden Globes for best picture (with Roma claiming the statue for Best Foreign Language film), yet with a different body voting for the Oscars it could be one of the other films that wins Best Picture. You also have to take note that it’s very rare for a film to take Best Picture without its director being nominated for Best Director, and this year only four of the Best Picture nominees have their director nominated as well. Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman), Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War),  Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite),  Alfonso Cuaron (Roma) and Adam McKay (Vice) are the nominees, which means it will probably come down to The Favourite or Roma taking home the statue.

This year’s Best Actress race is going to be an interesting one as well. Lady Gaga was expected to win the Golden Globe earlier this month for A Star Is Born, but was beat out by Glenn Close of The Wife. Olivia Colman also won a Golden Globe for The Favourite, All three actresses have been nominated for an Oscar as well. Joining them are Yalitza Aparicio (Roma) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?). In the supporting actress category Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz have been nominated for their roles in The Favourite, while  Amy Adams (Vice), Marina de Tavira (Roma) and Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) are nominated as well. King won the Golden Globe against a very similar group of women.

When it comes to Best Actor, the race is fairly wide open. Even though Christian Bale (Vice) and Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) took home Golden Globes, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will win the Oscar for Best Actor. In fact only one of them will be able to. Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) was a favourite to win at the Globes and lost, and with him failing to get a Best Director Oscar nom, he may just be the favorite to win the Oscar. Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) are also nominated. When it comes to Best Supporting Actor you have to wonder if this is the year Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born) finally gets a trophy. There was a lot of shock at him failing to get nominated for a Golden Globe, so this might just be his chance. He will face stiff competition from Mahershala Ali (Green Book),  Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Sam Rockwell (Vice) who all bring strong cases to the table.

With several strong films getting a fair number of nominations, this may just be the most interesting Academy Awards event in several years. We’re looking forward to seeing the final outcome on February 24th.

Jason Momoa Shaves Off Beard For A Good Cause

From Game of Thrones, to Aquaman and Frontier, Jason Momoa is front and centre, along with his iconic beard. The actor posted a video on Wednesday though, stating it was time for a change, and shaved for the camera. It wasn’t without a purpose though as one might initially think. The massive actor is trying to raise awareness for aluminum recycling.

“I just want to bring awareness that plastics are killing our planet, and I think I have a solution,” Momoa said in the video as he shaved. “I don’t wanna bitch about it, but there’s only one thing that can really help our planet and save our planet, as long as we recycle, and that’s aluminum.”

Momoa goes on to say he’s specifically talking about aluminum cans making a return to replace all the plastic bottles that are used these days. He states that aluminum can continue to be recycled, and that “75 percent of aluminum that’s ever been used is still in circulation today.” He backs himself up with stats too, so it’s not just him talking for the sake of talking. He also says that it only takes 60 days for aluminum cans to go from the recycling bin, to back on the shelves with a new beverage.

One of Momoa’s biggest pet peeves too, was not being able to find water available in aluminum cans. A new product seems to be on the way though to change that, but other than the fact that it will be coming from the Ball Corporation, not much else is known about it.

“There’s a change coming, and it’s aluminum,” Momoa said. “You gotta get rid of your plastic water bottles. Aquaman’s trying to do the best he can for my kids, for your kids, for the world. Love you guys.”

In case you were wondering, it’s been seven years since Momoa had shaved his beard off. He also said he won’t be shaving his head though, as his wife wouldn’t like that.

You can watch the entire video below.

Billie Eilish’s Debut Album Set To Become The Second-Biggest Album Release of 2019

If you haven’t heard of Billie Eilish before, it’s pretty much a given you will be hearing a lot of her in the future. In the first full week of release, the teenage sensation’s debut album is expected to reach between 250,000 to 275,000 equivalent album units sold, which would make it the second-biggest release of the year.

Eilish’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”, appears to be only trailing Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” for the title of the biggest 2019 album debuts to date. The album itself has benefitted from strong streaming figures, but also traditional album purchases as well. That in itself is unusual considering Eilish’s fan base has grown up mainly just streaming music, and not buying physical albums. Even more unusual is the fact that 5 of the albums 14 tracks were also released before the album, which usually cuts back on album purchases, yet in this case it doesn’t seen to have affected the sales at all.

Eilish released her debut single, “Ocean Eyes” in 2016, and it quickly went viral and became a huge success. She released an EP in 2017, which was also a huge success. It September 2017 Apple named her as its newest Up Next artist.  In her short career, Eilish already has seven gold and two platinum singles.

Apple Set To Launch Their Own TV Streaming Service

Netflix and Amazon might need to be looking over their shoulder, and not at the upcoming Disney streaming service. Apple announced on Monday that their long-anticipated streaming TV service, Apple TV+ is ready to launch, and they’ve brought a lot of heavy hitters along with them for the ride.

When Apple made the announcement on Monday, they bought along Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Jason Momoa, Alfre Woodard, and Kumail Nanjiani with them. The presentation stated that Apple TV was set to launch this fall in more than 100 countries.

While Apple didn’t state how much the service would cost when it was finally launched, it did give a glimpse into the kinds of shows we can expect. Speilberg for instance indicated that his 80s science fiction anthology series Amazing Stories, was set to be revived. While Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell would be starring in a new drama called The Morning Show, that they said would take the viewers behind the scenes of morning TV. Other shows on the way include Sara Bareilles and J.J. Abrams’ new series Little Voice, Momoa and Woodard’s drama Seeing, and Nanjiani’s Little America. Apple also announced a new Sesame Street spin-off, Helpsters.
