The Can’t Miss Movies Of TIFF 2018

Tiff can be a little overwhelming. After all with over 300 movies screening throughout the festival, it can be a little hard to figure out what you want to see. This year’s line-up features some of Hollywood’s (not to mention the world’s) biggest stars as well. From Viola Davis, to Nicole Kidman, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pine and many more, at least a few of your favourite stars should be here. And if you didn’t have a chance to get out to a film this past weekend, don’t think you missed your chance, as the festival runs all week long. Here are some of the films we think you should see.

Widows: This movies by Oscar winning director Steve McQueen is based on a British TV series of the same name, and it follows the story of four women who come together to deal with a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. The film’s cast includes Liam Neeson, Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert Duvall, Colin Farrell and many more, and is well worth checking out. Watch for this one come award’s season.

A Star Is Born: Perhaps the most hyped film of the festival is Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut. Yes, it’s been done before, but Cooper’s performance, alongside Lady Gaga is really worth seeing.  It’s the story of a washed up singer and his protege whose star quickly shines brighter than his own. Cooper very well might earn his first Oscar for this one, and it wouldn’t be a grasp to see Gaga getting an Oscar nomination either. It’s also very likely to win the People’s Choice award of the festival.

The Sisters Brothers: Even if you don’t like Westerns, you might still enjoy this film about a pair of killers in 1850’s United States, sent on a quest to capture a chemist who betrayed their boss.  John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed star in this adaptation of the novel by Canadian author Patrick DeWitt. The film is both comedic and touching, yet still has the violent Western undertone you’d expect from the genre.

Halloween:  Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the franchise that made her one of the original scream queens of Hollywood. The makers of this film decided to ignore the convoluted sequels, and make this one a direct sequel to the original, so really you can forget most of everything you’ve seen before. It’s an interesting take on the franchise, and will give audiences the thrill they are looking for next month.

Jason Momoa Shaves Off Beard For A Good Cause

From Game of Thrones, to Aquaman and Frontier, Jason Momoa is front and centre, along with his iconic beard. The actor posted a video on Wednesday though, stating it was time for a change, and shaved for the camera. It wasn’t without a purpose though as one might initially think. The massive actor is trying to raise awareness for aluminum recycling.

“I just want to bring awareness that plastics are killing our planet, and I think I have a solution,” Momoa said in the video as he shaved. “I don’t wanna bitch about it, but there’s only one thing that can really help our planet and save our planet, as long as we recycle, and that’s aluminum.”

Momoa goes on to say he’s specifically talking about aluminum cans making a return to replace all the plastic bottles that are used these days. He states that aluminum can continue to be recycled, and that “75 percent of aluminum that’s ever been used is still in circulation today.” He backs himself up with stats too, so it’s not just him talking for the sake of talking. He also says that it only takes 60 days for aluminum cans to go from the recycling bin, to back on the shelves with a new beverage.

One of Momoa’s biggest pet peeves too, was not being able to find water available in aluminum cans. A new product seems to be on the way though to change that, but other than the fact that it will be coming from the Ball Corporation, not much else is known about it.

“There’s a change coming, and it’s aluminum,” Momoa said. “You gotta get rid of your plastic water bottles. Aquaman’s trying to do the best he can for my kids, for your kids, for the world. Love you guys.”

In case you were wondering, it’s been seven years since Momoa had shaved his beard off. He also said he won’t be shaving his head though, as his wife wouldn’t like that.

You can watch the entire video below.

Billie Eilish’s Debut Album Set To Become The Second-Biggest Album Release of 2019

If you haven’t heard of Billie Eilish before, it’s pretty much a given you will be hearing a lot of her in the future. In the first full week of release, the teenage sensation’s debut album is expected to reach between 250,000 to 275,000 equivalent album units sold, which would make it the second-biggest release of the year.

Eilish’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”, appears to be only trailing Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” for the title of the biggest 2019 album debuts to date. The album itself has benefitted from strong streaming figures, but also traditional album purchases as well. That in itself is unusual considering Eilish’s fan base has grown up mainly just streaming music, and not buying physical albums. Even more unusual is the fact that 5 of the albums 14 tracks were also released before the album, which usually cuts back on album purchases, yet in this case it doesn’t seen to have affected the sales at all.

Eilish released her debut single, “Ocean Eyes” in 2016, and it quickly went viral and became a huge success. She released an EP in 2017, which was also a huge success. It September 2017 Apple named her as its newest Up Next artist.  In her short career, Eilish already has seven gold and two platinum singles.

Apple Set To Launch Their Own TV Streaming Service

Netflix and Amazon might need to be looking over their shoulder, and not at the upcoming Disney streaming service. Apple announced on Monday that their long-anticipated streaming TV service, Apple TV+ is ready to launch, and they’ve brought a lot of heavy hitters along with them for the ride.

When Apple made the announcement on Monday, they bought along Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Jason Momoa, Alfre Woodard, and Kumail Nanjiani with them. The presentation stated that Apple TV was set to launch this fall in more than 100 countries.

While Apple didn’t state how much the service would cost when it was finally launched, it did give a glimpse into the kinds of shows we can expect. Speilberg for instance indicated that his 80s science fiction anthology series Amazing Stories, was set to be revived. While Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell would be starring in a new drama called The Morning Show, that they said would take the viewers behind the scenes of morning TV. Other shows on the way include Sara Bareilles and J.J. Abrams’ new series Little Voice, Momoa and Woodard’s drama Seeing, and Nanjiani’s Little America. Apple also announced a new Sesame Street spin-off, Helpsters.
