The Backstreet Boys Release New Single And Video

The Backstreet Boys are, ummm, back, and their new single Don’t Go Breaking My Heart may just be their first real hit in years.

The Boys, or really men as they should be known now, released their new single and video late last night, and ever since then social media has been talking about it. The catchy tune (not to be confused with the Elton John song by the same name) has proven that the group still has it, even after all this time.

Band members AJ McLean, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell are now all in their 40s, with the baby of the band being Nick Carter who is 38. Both the video and song provide the kind of nostalgia you would expect from the group, and to see that they can still hold their own when it comes to choreography is just what you’d hope for. The group is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, as well as being in the middle of a Las Vegas residency. They haven’t released a new album since 2013, and although they haven’t announced any plans to change that,  it seems like one is on the way.

Richardson said in a statement to Billboard that “The minute we heard this song, we knew it was special. I geeked out over the piano and synths. When that groove drops on the second verse, COME ON. Great verse, hook and melodies. Just makes you wanna listen over and over again.”

It will be interesting to see what else the Boys have in store for us this year.

Two New Characters Exiting Star Trek: Discovery At The End Of Season 2

Star Trek: Discovery has turned into quite the hit for CBS All Access, and for the second season several new additions were made to the cast. Among those added were Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn, who played classic Trek characters Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Enterprise and the member of his crew Number One. While it wasn’t known going in what the plans were for the characters for later seasons, it’s now been let out that neither will be moving beyond season two.

Deadline is reporting that their sources told them that both Mount and Romijn has one year deals, and were only signed to be part of the season 2 story arc. The plans were to sync up Discovery with the original Star Trek by the end of the season. Of course if plans are to keep with the original Trek cannon, that means Mount’s character Pike may be heading towards a tragic ending. In the original series Pike was only captain of the Enterprise for the pilot episode, and eventually ends up paralyzed, disfigured and mute. In the recent movies Pike was killed in the second film by Kahn, although that film series takes place in a different universe and doesn’t match up to any of the previous films or TV shows that came before it. This could also mean that Captain Kirk may make an appearance in season 3.

Mount’s time on the show hasn’t been the easiest, considering he was involved in a physical altercation with one of the directors in August of last year during the filming of an episode. At the time the incident was reviewed by CBS HR and they determined that the incident was just an accident as the actor was preparing for an upcoming scene and made contact with the director before cameras started rolling.

Shawn Mendes Was The Big Winner At The 2019 Juno Awards, But Corey Hart Stole The Show

If there are a few take-aways from the 2019 Juno Awards they are this: Shawn Mendes took home the most trophies, Sting made a surprise appearance and Corey Hart can still get the crowd on their feet.

On the awards side of things, Mendes took home five of the six trophies he was nominated for, including single of year for “In My Blood”, artist of the year, album of the year, songwriter of the year and pop album of the year. Unfortunately he was unable to attend the ceremony, and could only respond via Twitter. He did pre-record a rendition of his now Juno-winning single though, which played during the broadcast.  Other winners during the night included Michael Bublé for adult contemporary album of the year, Tory Lanez for rap recording of the year, Arkells for rock recording of the year and Avril Lavigne in the Juno Fan Choice Award category. Post Malone took home the statue for international album of the year for Beerbongs Bentleys.

Sting made an appearance last night as well during the broadcast, to hand out the humanitarian award to Canadian producer-composer extraordinaire David Foster. The international superstar is currently in Toronto performing in the musical The Last Ship, and has been making appearances all across the region, so we should have known he’d be at the Junos as well. Still, it was a nice surprise.

Although Mendes taking the most awards, and Sting making a surprising appearance helped make the 2019 Juno Awards memorable, it was Corey Hart who stole the show. The 80s music staple retired in the late 90s, and was being inducted in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the broadcast. The musician took the stage and performed his hits Never Surrender and Sunglasses at Night, and it got the crowd on their feet. Hart didn’t appear to have missed a beat, and if anything, he’s not only introduced a new generation to his music, but he’s more than likely boosted interest for his upcoming tour of Canada.

Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh Set To Host Late-Night NBC Talk Show

It was a little bit of a surprise when Carson Daly announced he was giving up his late-night talk show, Last Call with Carson Daly. The series premiered in 2002, and has been a fixture at 1:37 each weeknight since then. NBC has trumped his news now by announcing the show that will replace it.

NBC announced yesterday that Canadian YouTube host Lilly Singh, aka Superwoman, would be getting her own show starting in September. The show, called A Little Late with Lilly Singh, would air at 1:35 am five nights a week, and would be lone late night show hosted by a woman on a major broadcast network. The show is set to be a half-hour program, and would include interviews and pre-taped comedy sketches.

In a released statement Singh said the move was “a dream come true.” Her previous, non-YouTube acting experience, include the HBO’s movie Fahrenheit 451 and big-screen film Bad Moms. The multi-talented, Toronto-area native started her YouTube channel in 2010, and has worked with such celebrities as Dwayne Johnson, Selena Gomez, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Priyanka Chopra, Shay Mitchell and Amber Rose.
