Katy Perry Loses Dark Horse Copyright Infringement Case

Katy Perry’s 2013 hit single Dark Horse sold more than 13 million copies worldwide, and now a Los Angeles jury has determined that the single improperly copied a beat from a 2009 song called Joyful Noise by Christian rapper Flame.

Perry’s single credits several songwriters, including Perry herself and Sarah Hudson, and was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Cirkut. The beat in question during the trial was created by Cirkut. The trial lasted just a week, while the lawsuit itself was filed back in 2014. During the trial, Perry’s lawyers argued that if beats were subject to copyright, all songwriters could be affected and it would have potential implications for musicians down the road. “They’re trying to own basic building blocks of music, the alphabet of music that should be available to everyone,” they stated. Perry did take the stand during the trial, stating she’d never head of Joyful Noise or Flame before, but she wasn’t present during the verdict. Her co-writers claimed the same thing.

Now it’s up to the nine-person jury to determine how much Perry, her co-writers and producers will have to pay out. Perry’s label, Capitol Records, was also found liable.

Dark Horse appeared on Perry’s album Prism, which was released in October of 2013. The song went on to be nominated for a Grammy, and was part of Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl halftime show.

Watch The Morning Show’s Full Trailer

One of television’s most anticipated new shows, The Morning Show, teased everyone last week with a trailer that didn’t really show anything. Really the only thing it showed was a hallway as you heard the actors say a few lines. Thankfully Apple didn’t wait long to give a full trailer this morning that gives us a pretty good look at what to expect when the series launches this fall.

The Morning Show is a drama that stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell. It follows the story of a group of people who run a daily morning show program. In the trailer it becomes pretty obvious that the show is planning to imitate real life stories, for instance you get to see Aniston’s character addressing on air why her co-host was fired. It appears to be for sexual misconduct allegations, like the one Matt Lauer went through a couple of years back. The show will follow more stories than just that though. The trailer also shows Witherspoon’s character’s rise as a new co-host, and Aniston’s character breaking down before making a terrific comeback. It should be interesting to catch an inside glimpse at what these morning hosts go through every day.

Throughout the trailer you catch a glimpse at various other stars of the series, including Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Karen Pittman, Bel Powley and Janina Gavankar. There have been other TV shows and movies made before about this type of environment, such as The Newsroom and Morning Glory, but this series is already feeling like it could be something unique on its own. It’s set to premiere this fall on Apple TV, but no exact date has been given as of yet.

Ronda Rousey Joins Cast Of Firefighter Drama 9-1-1

It can truly be said that mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey has done a lot over the course of her career. From winning a medal at the Olympics, to spending time in the octagon of the UFC, lacing up wrestling boots in the WWE, to starring in movies and having guest spots on TV, Rousey has really done a lot of different things, and now she is set to be a series regular on the hit Fox firefighter drama 9-1-1.

Rousey began training in Judo at the age of 11, and at 17 became the youngest competitor in the sport in the 2004 Olympics. While she didn’t win any medals that year, she won a bronze four years later in 2008. Afterwards she retired from the sport, and started training for ultimate fighting. In 2012, after 2 years in the sport, she became the first female fighter to sign with the UFC. She dominated the sport for 3 years, going undefeated. When she eventually lost the title, and the rematch, Rousey retired from the sport and moved onto other things. In 2018 she joined the WWE, quickly winning their women’s title, which she held until Wrestlemania earlier this year. After losing the title she announced she would be taking a leave from the company to start a family.

Throughout her career as a fighter, Rousey also took time to stars in movies such as Furious 7, The Expendables 3 and Mile 22. Her role on 9-1-1 will be her first foray into a regular role on television, and she will play a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The series also stars Peter Krause, Angela Bassett and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The third season is set to premiere on September 23rd.

Watch Alessia Cara Mimic Billie Eilish On ‘The Tonight Show

Alessia Cara has a new EP coming out on September 6th, and in the meantime she’s hitting the talk shows to promote it. Last night she appeared on The Tonight Show, and during her segment she challenged Jimmy Fallon to a rematch of Wheel of Musical Impressions.

Back in 2017 Cara lost the game to Fallon, and she was determined not to do so again. This time around the Canadian singer perfectly copies Billie Eilish’s sound while singing Pop Goes The Weasel. For her second impressions she mimics Amy Winehouse singing Old Macdonald Had a Farm, except in this case it was to the tune of Rehab.  Fallon on the other hand pretends he’s The Doors singing Sesame Street’s Rubber Duckie, You’re the One, following by a rendition of Baby Shark as if Mick Jagger was singing it. Cara wins it in the end though when she apes Alanis Morissette singing Hush, Little Baby.

Fallon really didn’t stand a chance this time around, and we wonder if there will be a third round in the future.
