Yesterday Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul took to Twitter at the same moment and sent out the same message. That message? A photo of a pair of donkeys and the word “Soon.” What that means exactly is unknown, but the internet went crazy because of it.
Here’s what is known, a Breaking Bad sequel film is coming. When it’s coming, or what it’s about, or even who’s in it is completely unknown however. After the Tweets appeared online people started wondering if perhaps the film is almost done, and will be released soon. Breaking Bad writer and it’s prequel series Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould reacted to the posts with one of his own that simply said “Looking forward to this”, which added even more fuel to the rumors.
Breaking Bad ended in 2013 after a very successful 5 years on AMC, and in the end Cranston’s Walter White character had been apparently killed, and Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman was seen driving off to an unknown destination. Speculation is the sequel would follow Pinkman to wherever he was headed, and continue his story, but now it’s looking like White may have somehow survived the ordeal as well. Series creator Vince Gilligan however has said nothing, and no details have emerged about it, but the film is believed to have already been shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico from last November to February. While Paul has stated that he would love to do a film, he has not confirmed if he already has made one.
Paul and Cranston may just be toying with fans, and their post may not mean anything. But even if they are, it’s still fun to figure out what they are talking about.
Gossip Girl Sequel On The Way
HBO Max has announced that they are moving forward with a new Gossip Girl TV series. The original show ran for six season from 2007 to 2012, and was a huge hit for The CW, and HBO is hoping there is still a little more magic left in it.
Gossip Girl was based on the book series by Cecily von Ziegesar, and followed the stories of privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York. The exploits by these teens are reported on online by a ruthless blogger who is always watching, and whose identity isn’t revealed until the final episode. The show starred Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick.
The new show will be ten episodes long, and take place eight years later. It will follow a completely new story, but will be set in the same world. Whether that means any of the original cast will make an appearance or not is unknown. HBO Max describes the show as follows. Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.
The new Gossip Girl series will air sometime after the launch of HBO Max in the spring of 2020.
Netflix Alters Controversial 13 Reasons Why Scene
It’s been over two years since Netflix released the first season of 13 Reasons Why, and after all that time the streaming service has decided to alter the graphic and controversial scene in the season 1 finale. The scene in question is the one that depicts Hanna Baker’s (Katherine Langford) suicide.
The first season of 13 Reason’s Why follows the story of a teenager who committed suicide, but not before recording 13 cassette tapes explaining her decision. Each episode focuses on a different character that she at least partially blames for her decision. The series was adapted from Jay Asher’s 2007 YA novel of the same name, and spawned a sequel that was released the following year. While the series depicted some very adult, and serious things throughout, it was the final episode that really had people talking.
In the episode, about half way through, you see a Hanna climb into a bathtub of water and slit her wrists with a razor blade, before screaming out in pain before lying back and dying as tears stream down her face. Netflix displayed a message before the episode, warning viewers that “The following episode contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing and/or may not be suitable for younger audiences, including graphic depictions of violence and suicide. Viewer discretion is advised.”
At the time Netflix stated that they wanted to depict as the suicide as realistically as possible, because it was their responsibility to tell the truth. Things have changed though, and now Netflix has altered the scene to exclude the moment Hannah slits her wrists. The scene jumps from Hannah contemplating the act, to her parents finding her body.
In a statement Netflix said “We’ve heard from many young people that 13 Reasons Why encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help—often for the first time. As we prepare to launch season 3 later this summer, we’ve been mindful about the ongoing debate around the show. So on the advice of medical experts, including Dr. Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we’ve decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from season 1.”
Yorkey also released his own statement. He said, “It was our hope, in making 13 Reasons Why into a television show, to tell a story that would help young viewers feel seen and heard, and encourage empathy in all who viewed it, much as the bestselling book did before us. Our creative intent in portraying the ugly, painful reality of suicide in such graphic detail in season 1 was to tell the truth about the horror of such an act, and make sure no one would ever wish to emulate it. But as we ready to launch season 3, we have heard concerns about the scene from Dr. Christine Moutier at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and others, and have agreed with Netflix to re-edit it. No one scene is more important than the life of the show, and its message that we must take better care of each other. We believe this edit will help the show do the most good for the most people while mitigating any risk for especially vulnerable young viewers.”
This third season of 13 Reasons Why is expected this summer, but as of yet an exact premiere date has not been given.
Lashana Lynch Set To Play 007
With all the rumours that were going around about who should play the next James Bond, including actor Idris Elba who trolled fans on social media about it last year, filmmakers have decided to add a new wrinkle of their own. Over the weekend it was revealed that Lashana Lynch, who was hired on in a mysterious role, would be the first woman to tackle the role of 007. Just not that of James Bond.
According to the Daily Mail, Lynch’s character will be known as 007, the secret agent number James Bond has held from the beginning. She won’t be playing James Bond though, but instead be a new secret agent who took over the number. In the film Daniel Craig will reprise his role as James Bond, who will be called back to duty from retirement. It’s at that point he will meet the new 007, who took over the number after he left MI-6.
Lynch, a West London native, is most famously known as playing fighter pilot Maria Rambeau in this year’s Captain Marvel. It’s been known for awhile that she was going to be in the new James Bond film, the 25th of the series, but until now her role was kept secret. It’s an interesting way to keep the character fresh, and perhaps if her role is popular enough maybe it will be spun off into new films in the same vein.
