Let’s be honest, when you go to see a Bruce Willis movie you pretty know know what you are getting yourself into from the start. He’s an action star, and as such he’s never really pushed the envelope too far when it comes to his choices of roles. In fact most of the time you don’t even remember his character’s name (his Die Hard character of John McClane being one of the few exceptions), and you just think of his character as Bruce Willis. Death Wish is his latest film, and well, it is what it is.
Bruce Willis plays Dr. Paul Kersey. He’s a hard-working, well-respected family man who is preparing for his daughter’s college departure while helping his down-on-his-luck brother. Things change though after thieves break into his home while he’s at work. His wife is killed and his daughter is put into a coma. This launches Kersey into a one-man crusade against criminals as he tries to find those responsible.
Director Eli Roth is known for his gore-ridden horror films, but with Death Wish he takes a step back. Sure there are a few scenes that you may want to turn your head away from, but over all he does a pretty good job of toning it down. The movie takes a bit of time to get moving, but once it does the action is pretty much what you would expect. And don’t go looking for a big, complex plot either as the film basically cuts out the philosophy behind the original 1974 film and the novel it was based on. There’s also a reason Bruce Willis shouldn’t play a doctor. He’s just not that convincing as one. Of course none of that really matters because you are watching a Bruce Willis movie. You simply know going in that there will be plenty of plot-holes that don’t make sense, so-so acting and not much of a story. In the end though it’s all about the action, and if it’s good enough, you’ll suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours and enjoy what you are watching.
Death Wish may not be an Oscar worthy film, but it’s fun to watch. Bruce Willis does his usual job, and if you like his usual films, you’ll like this one too.
Kristen Bell Confirms, Veronica Mars Is Back Again
Ever since Kristen Bell’s series Veronica Mars premiered in 2004 it’s had a cult following. Even horror master Stephen King expressed his love for the show, which only helped its audience grow. Unfortunately a cult following didn’t help it get extraordinary ratings, and the series was cancelled after just three seasons. Bell though never gave up on the show. She always claimed it would come back. In 2014 she was proven right, when the series got a theatrical release thanks to a Kickstarter campaign to fund it. Even though it was popular among fans, the film didn’t make back its budget and once again the show looked like it was over. Bell however never thought so, and constantly said it would be back, and yesterday she once again proved that her determination had paid off.
Bell took to Instagram Thursday morning to make an announcement. “Did you guys know that as of summer 2019, all the old Veronica Mars episodes will be available on Hulu to stream and re-watch, which is great because you’ll need to brush up since we’re making another one.” She went on to say that “Veronica has always been a super hero without a Cape. And I think she’s exactly what the world needs right now.”
Hulu released their own statement as well, stating that the show would be an eight-episode limited series, and would focus on the murder of spring breakers in Neptune. Mars Investigations is then hired by one of the victim’s parents to find the killer.
While waiting for the series to return in 2019, Bell’s fans can continue to watch her in NBC’s comedy The Good Place.
Attention all Marshmallows: BREAKING NEWS!!!!! We are OFFICIALLY back in business!!! A new #veronicamars series is coming back, on @hulu !!!! Veronica has always been a super hero without a Cape. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel And Game Of Thrones Top The Emmy Awards
Amazon has done what no streaming service has done before, win an Emmy award for Best Comedy for their show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. On the drama side of things it was a returning Game of Thrones that took the trophy once again, beating out last year’s winner The Handmaid’s Tale. All in all it was a night ruled by the two shows.
Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a sitcom about a 1950s homemaker who decides to give stand-up comedy a try after her home life starts to make her unhappy. The series won eight trophies altogether, including the aforementioned Best Comedy trophy, best actress honors for star Rachel Brosnahan, best supporting actress for Alex Borstein, and writing and directing trophies for the series creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino. Game of Thrones on the other hand won the most trophies of the night. Of their nine statues, they won Best Drama, and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage. The series wasn’t nominated last year because with the summer premiere it didn’t qualify, allowing The Handmaid’s Tale to take its place.
The bigger surprises of the evening including The Crown’s Claire Foy beating out The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss and Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh. Matthew Rhys finally took home an acting trophy for The Americans, a series that has largely been passed over by the Emmy’s throughout its six, critically acclaimed seasons. And after four decades of being on television, Henry Winkler finally took home an acting trophy for his role in Barry.
Green Books Wins TIFF’s Top Award
The Toronto International Film Festival has drawn to a close once more, and on Sunday the awards were handed out for the top films of the festival. While there were several films in the race for the People’s Choice Award, it was Peter Farrelly’s Green Book that came out on top.
Green Book is the true story of a white bouncer (played by Viggo Mortensen) who becomes the driver/bodyguard of an African-American classical pianist (Oscar winner Mahershala Ali) who is on tour through the 1960s American South. They must rely on the “Green Book” in order to survive the dangers of the time, which was a book created to guide people to establishments that were safe for African-Americans during that time period. Part drama, and part comedy, this film drew rave reviews from crowds at the festival, which puts it in a good position come awards’ season. In the past, five audience awards winners won the Oscar’s Best Picture Trophy, including Slumdog Millionaire, 12 Years a Slave and The King’s Speech. In the last two years La La Land and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri took home the prize, and both were nominated for Best Picture.
Perhaps the most shocking things about Green Book is that it was directed by Peter Farrelly, who is best known for his work alongside his brother Bobby. Together they directed Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary and Shallow Hal.
